The United Kingdom
Transparency International's Defence and Security Programme (TI DSP) is based in London and part of Transparency International UK. The UK's Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces have been receptive and supportive of our work.
TI DSP engages directly with officers in the UK military, who have been receptive to finding ways of constructively addressing corruption as a strategic issue for deployed operations. TI DSP gives pre-deployment debriefings on corruption issues for officers going to and returning from Afghanistan, at the invitation of the Land Warfare Centre. The UK military is also engaged in conducting post-deployment debriefings on lessons learnt in relation to corruption during deployment.
The UK was a lead nation on the NATO Building Integrity initiative. The UK military is engaged in developing their counter-corruption doctrine and has consulted with TI DSP on these issues.
TI DSP has engaged with the UK defence industry since 2004. The national industry association, ADS, has signed on to the Common Industry Standards, and runs workshops and courses on defence industry compliance.
We work with UK military institutions such as the UK Defence Academy, with whom we cooperate on the NATO Building Integrity initiative, and with the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), with whom we organised a series of workshops in 2011 on counter corruption and development in Afghanistan.
The country is also a supporter of robust anti-corruption mechanisms in the UN Arms Trade Treaty.
The UK was part of our 2009 report, Building Integrity and Reducing Corruption Risk in Defence Establishments.
