Defence Against Corruption Governments Index: Call for Experts
We are looking for Country Assessors and Peer Reviewers for our new project: a global index to measure levels of integrity and corruption in national defence and security establishments worldwide.
This new metric will provide countries with a means to monitor the success of their anti-corruption mechanisms, and allow for comparison with other countries. It will allow national defence and security establishments to see how they can improve their anti-corruption practices and procedures across a range of areas: procurement, operations, and policy – to name just a few. In addition, metrics are strong advocacy tools, which can be used to press for reform, particularly in challenging sectors like defence and security.
We are especially looking for people to work with the following countries: Oman, Egypt, Norway and United Arab Estates.
Interested candidates can find more information and apply here.
Short-term researchers
We often require short-term researchers to supplement our work. Please check back to see when these opportunities become available.
This research is done on a volunteer basis, and it is an opportunity to have your work published by Transparency International. Our interns and researchers have gone on to work for Control Risks, the World Bank, USAID, Shell, and at the Transparency International Secretariat in Berlin.
Internships
TI -DSP sometimes requires interns, offering placements of up to 3 months. The precise nature of the work will be specified when the intern joins, but in general we seek to strike a balance between involvement in a specific research project, ad hoc projects, and general administrative support.
The internship is designed to benefit both the intern and TI-DSP. The intern may be expected to do some basic administrative tasks, but this will be balanced by more intellectually demanding projects.
Matt Boardman, 2nd year Cambridge history student was our intern for 6 weeks last year: ‘As an intern with TI-DSP, I researched and wrote a report on police corruption around the world. Although the team is small, it is very influential and works with some very high-level figures: in my fourth week I had the interesting experience of a meeting with the Deputy Georgian Ambassador.’
Cormac Seachoy, Masters student (International Security and Global Governance) at Birkbeck College and another of our former interns thinks the experience was a fascinating learning curve: ‘I spent three months with TI-UK in March 2011 and enjoyed contributing to a diverse set of projects. It was everything I had hoped for in terms of both the experiences I gained and as an introduction to the anti-corruption sector. Working within the TI-UK team provided an opportunity to develop my understanding of the work TI-UK does and its broader context on an international level.’
Applications are welcome from those with the required skills and experience. These will include:
- At least a Bachelor’s degree, preferably a Master’s degree, in a relevant discipline (we will consider undergraduates in exceptional circumstances for the summer period, particularly those studying for relevant degrees, with a track record of academic excellence)
- Familiarity with the transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption discourse
- Fluency in English and ability to write succinctly
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office
- Highly organised, self-motivated, and reliable
No prior work experience is necessary – this is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to the work of a dynamic and hands on anti-corruption organization, interacting with senior staff members.
The Internship is an unpaid position, although the costs of daily travel and lunch will be reimbursed.
Applicants must be available to work 4 days per week for at least two months. Ideally, they will work for a full 3 months.
The expectation is that applicants will be available to work for 5 days per week.
Ideally, applicants should have the facility to work off-site for 1-2 days per week if required, for example at home or in a university library.
Due to the overwhelming volume of applicants, we regret that we are unable to acknowledge or comment on applications unless you have been placed on the short-list for interview. If you have not heard from us within a month from applying, you should assume that your application has been unsuccessful.
Applicants should submit:
- A CV of no more than 2 pages.
- A cover letter of no more than one page, highlighting relevant study or experience and clearly stating for which period the application is made.
Please note that TI-DSP is unable to provide help for candidates to acquire work permits or visas. Applicants must be legally entitled to intern in the UK.
Applications should be sent in hard copy or by e-mail to:
